Coronado Triathlon Swim - Bike - Run - OH YA!!!
On Sunday September 26th, set your alarm to “early” and come and watch some of your Playa Community neighbours participate in the annual Extreme Coronado Triathlon. There are 4 teams coming out this year and a few single participants that are going to be taking part in this “Swim, Bike and Run” event held down at the Coronado Beach Club. The race can be done individually or in teams. For 99% of the team members that are participating this year from the expat community this is their first Triathlon. Try a Tri? Why not, what did they have to lose….they have everything to gain. The distances that these athletes are going to be knocking off before many people get out of bed are as follows:
Swim: 750 meters
Bike: 20kms
Run: 5kms
Training started 10 weeks ago and for a few of the swimmers this meant getting in the water and learning how to swim 30 lengths of the Coronado pool non-stop. They then took their skills to the ocean and together we have been swimming 1000 metres 2-3 times a week. Conditions are not always the same, and this has meant battling the waves, battling the current and battling the alarm clock for 7am practices.
The cyclists have a 20km trek, that consists of dodging pot holes and dogs through the streets of Coronado. Anything can happen on this leg of the race, so our cyclists have to be prepared for flats, and wipe outs as they race back to the Beach Club to tag their runners who will finish off the event.
Our runners have a 5km route that will be more of a trail race as they navigate the bumpy roads, hills and dogs along the streets of the playacommunity. I know that the runners have been out 3-4 times a week practicing the route. The 5km jaunt will take them from the Beach Club to the Hotel a left back down to the Beach Road, past Punta Prieta and will finish on the beach in most likely ankle deep high tide water.
I have had a blast training for the swim with mi amigos. We are all extremely excited and nervous but truly ready to get out there and have fun. It goes to show that it doesn’t matter where you are or what you have done in life up to this point. When you have a goal, and work for that goal, anything is possible. We are looking forward to seeing you all along the trails and at the finish line. The race starts at 7am. Who knows maybe next year you might decide you may like to “Try a Tri”
