Alfredo de Saint-Malo Music Festival - Panama

The Alfredo de Saint-Malo Music Festival is a project created by the Fundación Sinfonía Concertante de Panamá in order to bring together national and International musicians. The intention of the yearly festival is to prepare Panamanian artists for the world of classical music. This year’s music festival will feature concerts in various settings from May 27 to June 6.

The festival is named for Alfredo de Saint Malo, born in Panama City in 1898, who studied violin at the Paris Conservatory where he earned the coveted Premier Prix de Violin. He performed on the Continent and in the USA playing a season with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. During a tour of Italy in 1929 the violinist played private concerts for Mussolini and for Pope Pius XII. In 1934 Alfredo de Saint Malo played a private concert for President and Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt. He was the first director of Panama’s National Conservatory of Music and played routinely with the National Symphony of Panama.

This year’s festival brings great talent to three different stages. There will be performances at the National Theater, the Anita Villalaz Theater, and the Reina Torres de Araúz art museum. Performances will include the National Symphony, Youth Orchestras, a chamber ensemble, the Youth Orchestra of the Americas with alumni and guests, the Pacific Arts Woodwind Quinter, the Dorian Consort, an opera performance, a violin/piano concert, and a chamber recital by festival faculty.

The festival will have artists from or graduates of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Youth Orchestra of the Americas, National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, Oregon Symphony Orchestra, Sacramento Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Trois-Rivieres Symponique, Orchestre Symphonique de Laval, Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, project Batuta, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, The Juilliard School, Indiana University, New England Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, Rice University, Austin Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the University of Cincinnati.
