November: Month of the Mother Country in Panama November is the month of the Mother Country in Panama. Three days after starting the month and two days before the end, Panamanians celebrate important dates for the consolidation of Panama as a free and sovereign territory. The most important dates that Panamanians celebrated during this month are:
November 3 - Panamanian separation from Colombia
On November 3, Panamanians celebrate the separation from Colombia. The Colombian Government neglect, the situation of hardship because of War of A Thousand Days (Guerra de los Mil Dias) and the Herran-Hay Treaty rejection were the main reason for and independence movement which received immediate support from the rest of the country to declare Panamanian territory as an independent and sovereign State.
November 4 - The Flag Day
On November 4 is celebrated the Day of the Panamanian Flag, which was designed by Manuel E. Amador and sewed by Maria Ossa de Amador. This is the day when Panamanians pay homage to this white, red and blue emblem with two stars. The red color symbolizes the “liberales” and the blue one, the “conservadores”, the two political parties that were in the fight during that time. Both colors take up a similar space in two blocks of an oblong quadrilateral. The other two white blocks symbolize the expected peace and there is a star on each one of them.
November 5 - Consolidation of Panamanian Independence from Colombia
On November 5 the Panamanian separation from Colombia is consolidated when the last Colombian troops, settled in Colon, left the isthmus thanks to the support of the United States army and the complicity of the Railroad Company authorities, who denied to transport the Colombian troops to the Capital.
November 10 – First Shout for Independence in La Villa de Los Santos
The First Shout for Independence in La Villa de Los Santos was a popular uprising against the Spanish Government in La Villa de Los Santos in Los Santos Province, according to popular tradition this movement was led by Rufina Alfaro, although this has not been verified historically. Even though, this event triggered a series of shouts for independence in several Panamanian towns, culminating in the Panamanian Independence from Spain in November 28, 1821.
This day is mainly celebrated in La Villa de Los Santos, but there are also activities in places where members of Los Santos community have moved.
November 28 – Panamanian Independence from Spain
On November 28, 1821, Panama consolidated its independence from Spain. The Isthmus was declared a free and independent territory from the Spanish power and of its own free will decided to join Colombia.
