Spay the Strays Mini campaign in Sora Sun, May 24th

Spay the Strays held their 7th spay and neuter campaign Sunday May 24th in the village of Sora, which is on the way to Altos del Maria. The STS vision is to control the stray dog and cat population in the Pacific Beach neighborhoods. Led by Mary Rhodes, Spay the Strays is an informal group of volunteers driven by a love for animals. Since its beginnings, the group’s efforts have been instrumental in sterilizing well over 1000 animals in the area.

McKee Foundation campaigns are smaller and rely heavily on volunteer assistance for many of the functions. “It’s great to be more a part of the process”, said Mary Rhodes who was busy shaving animals for surgery, a job that would normally be done by Spay Panama personnel at a mass campaign.

“We are seeing more male animals come in” said Mary Rhodes, “which is a sign that people are starting to understand that a neutered male makes a better pet”.  The group is also committed to educating people to take better care of their pets.

Spay the Stray campaigns are funded by community donations. This event was made possible by the Coronado Mahjong Group, who donate a dollar towards various causes for every day of competitive Mahjong play. A lively and colorful banner for the event was made by Art students from Finca la Maya.

Stay the Strays are planning another mini blitz with the McKee Foundation, in August. “We have so many people on the waiting list that we don’t need to advertise”, said Mary, stressing the importance of making an appointment to bring an animal in.
