About 50 percent of likely voters surveyed said they planned to vote for Martinelli. Incumbent party candidate Balbina Herrera earned 38 percent of their support.

The poll, conducted by Unimer Research International and published by Panama City's La Prensa newspaper on Monday, surveyed 1,600 Panamanians between April 15 and 17. It had a sampling error margin of 2.5 percentage points.

Martinelli, who owns a supermarket chain, founded the Democratic Change Party in 1998 and was its candidate for president in 2004.

He is this year running as the candidate of a coalition that includes the country's main opposition.
