Panama seizes $1 mln, 2.5 tons of drugs
(news.xinhuanet.com ) Panamanian police and anti-narcotics forces have seized about 1 million U.S. dollars in cash and some 2.5 tons of cocaine in the past two days, the country's Drug Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday.
Anti-narcotics forces seized 2.25 tons of cocaine that traffickers had buried in a Pacific coast beach in Veraguas province, 250 km west of Panama City, Prosecutor Jose Abel Almengor said.
In the district of San Miguelito, east of Panama City, anti-drug officers raided the home of a Mexican national, seizing 200 kg of cocaine and 1 million dollars in cash.
Another 29 kg of cocaine were found in the facilities of a Free Zone company in Colon, on the Atlantic coast, 80 km from the capital.
Panama has become a key conduit for drug trafficking, with Colombians, Mexicans and Panamanians vying for the drug transport market.
In 2008, the Drug Prosecutor's Office of Panama seized more than 50 tons of drugs.
