Renovation of Antique Buildings in Panama
(epiac1216.wordpress.com) One of the things that really bothers me, is the destruction of beautiful buildings and replacing them with match boxes in the name of progress. We have lost hundreds of architectural jewels because of irresponsible urban planning by our government authorities.
Panama is currently enjoying a construction boom and buildings are sprouting everywhere like wildflowers in Spring. That is good for the economy of our country and the creation of jobs. The bad thing, is that unique architectural buildings are coming down.
Having said that, I have to admit that there has been a change of policy lately. While visiting the General Assembly’s building (Palacio Legislativo) about a month ago, I was impressed that a beautiful old building was being restored The outer shell was kept intact, while they were making all sorts of modifications on the inside.
The building used to house the Ernesto J. Castillero Public Library, but because of its dilapidated conditions, it was transferred to Parque Omar. Now the old building is being renovated. I don’t know what it will be used for, but whatever it is, it will be an attraction to Panama City.
Even though the architectural style of this structure is not unattractive, mind you; it doesn’t have the charm of the building it replaced. It doesn’t have the beautiful balconies nor the details of the outer facade (second photograph from the top down).
I’ll be on the look out of new restorations underway of antique buildings in Panama and keep you posted. I feel glad that finally somebody decided to protect our old buildings for the enjoyment of future generations. Good Day.
