    Outbreaks of measles which began being reported late 2016 in Europe, Africa, Asia and the United States, have Panama’s Ministry of Health (Minsa) asking the population to check their vaccination cards before traveling abroad.

    The Sunshine Day Camp in Coronado is open to kids from 9 to 13 years of age. Registration for the camp is currently open for two sessions from June 12th to July 7th and July 10th to August 4th. Sunshine Day Camp runs 5 days a week from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and will take place at El Litoral in Coronado 
on Calle Punta Prieta #12.

    President Juan Carlos Varela announced that Panama would recognize China as a diplomatic ally in a televised statement Monday, June 12th, 2017. The same day the Vice-Minister of External Relations, Luis Miguel Hincapie, announced the break in diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

    A new scientific analysis indicates that  Earth’s oceans are rising nearly three times as rapidly than throughout most of the 20th century.  The paper from the National Academy of Science is not the first to find that the rate of the rising seas is increasing, however the rate of acceleration that it reports is the largest.

    2016 ended with a decline in Panamanian tourism, a trend that continues in the first five months of 2017. While the Comptroller General reports that hotel occupancy in the capital city was 51% in the first quarter of the year, others in the industry estimate this percentage to be lower with hotels using only 40% of their rooms.

    A bill that calls for the “reasonable use of plastic bags” and to “eliminate the current abuse” of plastic in Panama, has been approved. Politican, Acan-Efe Samir Gozaine from the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) proposed the bill that was approved in April.
