Veterinary equipment for this campaign was provided by Dr. Norman Alexis Escruceria (Dr. Alexis) of the McKee Foundation. Dr. Alexis was trained by
Spay Panama in the sterilize and release procedure they are famous for. However, unlike mass campaigns held with
Spay Panama support, this evet had only one operating table, one vet and one veterinarian assistant. Dr. Alexis was assisted by retired physician Carole Masquelier, from Coronado. Together the pair worked for 12 hours to sterilize 39 animals.
McKee Foundation campaigns are smaller and rely heavily on volunteer assistance for many of the functions. “It’s great to be more a part of the process”, said Mary Rhodes who was busy shaving animals for surgery, a job that would normally be done by Spay Panama personnel at a mass campaign.
“We are seeing more male animals come in” said Mary Rhodes, “which is a sign that people are starting to understand that a neutered male makes a better pet”. The group is also committed to educating people to take better care of their pets.
