Panama Facts

The Pollera is  the National Costume of Panama. Girls and women would generally own two polleras during their life: one before age 16 and one at adulthood. A single pollera can cost from several hundred to several thousands of dollars and take up to a year to create. The gold and pearl mosquetas and tembleques that accompany a pollera are generally passed down as heirlooms through generations.

(PanamaNewsRoom) Surfing on a wave  created by a powerboat, Panamanian surfer Gary Saavedra broke two world records on  Saturday March 19 behind a boat on Lake Gatún.

Saavedra, holder of 13 Panama surfing titles surfed for three hours 55 minutes over a distance of 41.3 miles on waves created by a power boar. Both achievements qualify asworld records for surfing behind a static wave and were witnessed by representatives of  The Guinness Book of World Records.

The previous records were held by British athlete Steve King, who surfed a static wave for one hour and six minutes in 2006.

Saavedra who said the effort was exhausting and had been made difficult by high winds, had been training for the attempt for months.
