Participants danced the night away to favourites from the last 20 years in aid of the spay and neuter campaign that was held in San Carlos last month. Spay the Strays is an informal group of expats committed to reducing the amount of stray dogs and cats seen in Panama’s Pacific neighborhoods, while improving the condition of pets in low income homes. A spay and neuter campaign held in San Carlos last March, sterilized 168 animals at an estimated cost of $3000. Such campaigns are funded through donations.
The group organizes sterilization events with the help of veterinary organizations like Spay Panama and the McKee Foundation. The work being done is making a dent in the area’s stray dog and cat population. Spay the Strays organized several successful campaigns last year in Gorgona. One resident remarked, “When I drive, Inotice there are fewer stays on the highway between Gorgona and Coronado”.
The April 1st dance party held at the Las Olas towers in Vista Mar raised, $700 through the door tickets, bar drinks and donations. The money will go towards last March’s campaign. Sheila Scott who organized the event was thrilled by the results. She hoped to raise, “400 to 500 dollars”.
The dance drew around 60 animal loving expats, who danced the night away to ipod hits from the last 20 years. The group plans to organize another dance event in October. Click thumbnail picture to open image gallery slideshow.
