A member of the finch family, the blue black Grassquit is common to most of Panama. The male looks black, but has a mixture of black and dark blue which is difficult to discern with the naked eye. It is usually seen with its mate which is mid brown with a mottled breast. They are typical finch size (10 cm - 4 in) with the short conical beak for cracking seeds and live near or on the ground.
