woodpeckerThis smaller woodpecker  is a resident of Coronado and can be heard tapping on dead trees where it makes its nest. It has a black and white flecked back and wings with a distinctive red nape and crown. The cheeks, breast and belly are a sand colour with a small red marking between its legs.

This woodpecker’s main diet is fruit and sap from trees. It has a short, single note and almost sorrowful,4-5 second trill which makes it easily spotted.
