Bastimento Island is a nesting spot for 4 threatened turtle species. It also has the only fresh water lagoon on an island area in Panama, which serves as a refuge for many fresh water turtles. The most important nesting site for sea turtles is Isla de Cañas, where every year about 30,000 turtles return to its beaches to lay their eggs between May and September.
